We’re looking to add a few more names to our list of potential writers for our recent endeavor: Exhibition Essays. Art historians, artists, and curators will be paired with upcoming exhibitions in an effort to extend the conversation at work in the gallery. We anticipate a lively exchange of critique between writer and artist and hope that the accompanying essay may offer a deeper interpretation for the visiting audience to consider. While there is no formal compensation for the essay, your piece will be published online here at our website, attached to email blasts about the show, and available to visitors in the gallery.
If you’re interested in writing, please email email@example.com with a short bio which includes your art interests and an attached CV. If you have a writing sample, please send it along, too. This will be a rolling application–there is no due date.
There is no format a writer must adhere to and we encourage you to be as creative as you’d like so long as you engage with the work and the artists showing in the exhibition.
Apply in April for a show in July
Every year, during the month of July, NAPOLEON presents a solo-exhibition selected by our ten members from a pool of applicants collected through an open call. We are interested in exhibiting work that is new to our Philadelphia audience, that takes risks, and makes good use of our small gallery space. If you would like to show with our gallery, we highly recommend you apply for this call.
We only accept applications during the month of April (ending April 30th at midnight). Applications should include a written proposal (300 words maximum), a CV, an artist statement, and 5 images or 2 videos all saved as a single PDF. If you’re including video work, please include a hyperlink in the .pdf to YouTube, Vimeo, or other video hosting site where we can easily view your work. Applications that are not presented in this manner will not be reviewed. Applicants will be notified by mid-May.
For 2015: The show runs from July 3rd to July 31st with an opening reception corresponding to the other galleries in our building. The artist will be responsible for supplying all materials required for displaying their work (framing, media equipment, pedestals, hanging wire, etc.). The artist will also be responsible for installation during June 29th – July 3rd and will deinstall the exhibition during August 1st and 2nd. Gallery dimensions and floor plan can be found http://napoleonnapoleon.com/about/floor-plan/
Email materials to firstname.lastname@example.org and title the email with your name and “July Show Submission 2015.” $20 application fee will be billed via PayPal upon receipt of materials. Again, we do not accept applications before April 1st or after April 30th.
