Victor Pérez “The Destroyer”

A couple of weeks ago week I was biking with my friend and artist Grimaldi Baez around Philadelphia when he told me about this one of a kind guy, Victor Pérez “The Cherry Hill skatepark Destroyer” because of his skateboarding style, legend of the skateboarding scene in Philly.
When I met him I felt as if we were friends for a long time.Pérez is a second generation Puertorrican, this gave us the chance to joke about our parents’ cursing. Soon we went downstairs to what seemed to be a mad scientist’s lab. It was an amazing woodshop dedicated to the creation of lamps from skateboard decks that were used all over the nation.
Pérez gave us some instructions and few minutes after Grimaldi was installing light bulbs, I was sanding decks and Victor assembling amazing lamps that where practical works of art. Skateboard decks, trucks, wheels, Thrasher (classical), magazine collages etc. So we kept joking and talking about projects and upcoming shows, also about a gallery Pérez had during his years in Florida as part of his skateboarding and artistic endeavor.
We kept going, some beers and chit chats, finally we finished a few lamps. It was amazing how we were part of that process. So with a good time, a good place and some good friends what else you want? Definitely a good contributor of the alternative art scene of Philly Mr. Pérez “The Destroyer”.
Victor Pérez currently has a show up in the Philadelphia International Airport until September 2012. Also he is having an upcoming event in his skateshop and gallery VGroove Studios located on 306 Girard Avenue Philadelphia, PA on April the 16th.
