‘City Wide’ mentioned on WHYY
Though the event is still in production mode, today ‘City Wide’ was announced on local radio airwaves by Grizzly Grizzly member Cindy Stockton-Moore.
Initially called “Collectives Acting Collectively,” NAPOLEON, along with other, similar art collectives and curatorial groups, has been participating in monthly meetings to discuss how the separate organizations could work together to make a month-long event that showcases why, right now, Philadelphia is go-to city to be an emerging artist.
In the radio piece by Peter Crimmins, Stockton-Moore says of the event and the city “There’s a lot of energy coming together. It feels like a critical mass right now.”

To be called City Wide (after the Philly-centric code words for a shot and a Yuengling) the art exhibition scheduled for November will showcase organizations on the fringes of contemporary art, swapping spaces with each other.
Philadelphia’s contemporary art landscape is distinctive for its culture of collectives: groups of artists who share energy and resources to pay rent, curate exhibitions, and inspire each other.
They range from relatively large nonprofits, such as Vox Populi with its bylaws and board members, to ad hoc groups of art school friends, including Fjord, with just a verbal understanding to share space.
As a big fan of this upcoming event and WHYY, all I can say is “Go, Cindy!”
