Make Theory Walk is a collaborative exhibition in demonstration of the forthcoming book Embodying Theory: Epistemology, Aesthetics and Resistance, by Dr. Elizabeth Bishop and, NAPOLEON – member, Tamsen Wojtanowski, to be released by Peter Lang Publishing later this year.
Within the exhibition setting, images are paired with excerpts from the text and produced as large-scale prints, displayed in a way reminiscent of the classroom or other public municipal building.
The driving force behind the book is to offer practical tools for personal and community struggles toward liberation by conceptualizing certain operations of power as care for the self and the collective.
Cadence set staccato within the text, the images act as full stops, not a break, but a pause to pump the breaks between ideas. Created in the spirit of automatism, images culled over a year of active camera-phone use in a wide variety of settings and situations, are condensed into single-screen experiences.
What to do with all that assaults us in a day, all that numbs us, excites us, comforts us? How is resistance an aesthetic existence? It is of our opinion that we revel in it, collect, construct, and deconstruct it, use it as fuel as we move forward to make the world in our image.
