Gioj de Marco: COM’ A TERRA QUIETE IN FOCO VIVO

COM’ A TERRA QUIETE IN FOCO VIVO
A solo exhibition by Gioj de Marco
March 7 – 22, 2020
Between conversations about the anthropocene and the sixth mass extinction, the last 500 years have been particularly good for our species. Human achievements in the past century alone suggest that we are experiencing the apogee of our civilization. For better or for worse, antibiotics, notions of free will, the harnessing of nuclear power and capitalism, are irreversible. There is no turning back time on bioengineering, space travel or globalization.
In this exhibit, I examine magical thinking, a human factor that has been central to the evolutionary trajectory we find ourselves on. At the center of COM’ A TERRA QUIETE IN FOCO VIVO is an active sculpture, a miracle reversal contraption constructed of gravity filters made with activated charcoal from the remains of the burned out town of Paradise, CA. One gallon of wine will hence be turned into water.
