OPPORTUNITIES

Join us!

NAPOLEON is excited to announce an open call for new members. We are looking for artists, curators, and other creative practitioners ready to engage with the Philadelphia art community through our (small) space in the newly re-opened Rollins Building at 319 North 11th Street.

NAPOLEON is a collective whose members share the responsibilities of running the gallery. Our core values as a collective are responsibility (to our community and to our craft), inclusivity (of all types of art and artists), and creativity (in the work that we do and how we run our collective). As an exhibition space, we work to improve the visibility of under-recognized art and artists in our region by curating month-long exhibitions. Our monthly exhibition essay program also offers a platform to arts writers near and far to share their craft. For our members, we provide a platform to create programming in our gallery space and participate in collaborative exchanges with other galleries in Philadelphia and beyond.

We work to make NAPOLEON a supportive community for our members, providing vital opportunities for feedback and dialogue within the group as we pursue our own creative practices. We are looking for innovative artists and curators who are collegial, communicative, and excited to take on new responsibilities and projects.

Programming: Members have the opportunity to program the space once every year to 18 months. Programming is entirely up to the member, whether a curated group exhibition, inviting an artist for a solo exhibition, or exhibiting the member’s own work. We actively seek out exhibition and project opportunities as well; in the past, these have included exchanges with other artist-run spaces across the country and participation in artist-run fairs.

Location: We are located in the Rollins Building which houses other galleries such as Vox Populi, Marginal Utility, Automat, Practice, and Grizzly Grizzly.

Dues: Not to exceed $50/month, depending on the total number of members. Dues cover rent  and utilities for the space as well as basic gallery needs.

Gallery Sitting: We share the duties of staffing the gallery for our Saturday and Sunday open hours. Hours are 2pm-6pm, and members are assigned a shift every six weeks or so. The schedule is set well in advance and we’re happy to have members swap shifts to fit their schedule, so long as the hours are covered.

Meetings: We meet on Friday evenings once a month. Members are expected to attend and participate in email discussions between meetings as needed.

First Fridays: Like meetings, we ask that members attend our First Friday openings as often as possible, and share in the duties to open and supervise the gallery on those nights. First Fridays run 6-10pm.

Other Duties: We share responsibilities for all aspects of running and maintaining the gallery space, and members are asked to contribute as they can, and according to their skills.

Availability: We are seeking independent artists, curators and/or creative practitioners who can commit time and energy to furthering our collective. Therefore, we ask that those currently enrolled in a degree-granting program do not apply.

If this sounds like something you’d like to be part of, please put together the following materials in a single PDF and email them to napoleon.philadelphia@gmail.com:

Writers Wanted!

We’re looking to add a few more names to our list of potential writers for our recent endeavor: Exhibition Essays.  Art historians, artists, and curators will be paired with upcoming exhibitions in an effort to extend the conversation at work in the gallery.  We anticipate a lively exchange of critique between writer and artist and hope that the accompanying essay may offer a deeper interpretation for the visiting audience to consider.  While there is no formal compensation for the essay, your piece will be published online here at our website, attached to email blasts about the show, and available to visitors in the gallery.

If you’re interested in writing, please email napoleon.philadelphia@gmail.com with a short bio which includes your art interests and an attached CV.  If you have a writing sample, please send it along, too.  This will be a rolling application–there is no due date.

Please take a look at the essays we have put forth thus far.

There is no format a writer must adhere to and we encourage you to be as creative as you’d like so long as you engage with the work and the artists showing in the exhibition.
