Every year, during the month of July, NAPOLEON presents a solo-exhibition selected by our members from a pool of applicants collected through an open call. We are interested in exhibiting work that is new to our Philadelphia audience, that takes risks, and makes good use of our small gallery space. If you would like to show with our gallery, we highly recommend you apply for this call. The winner of the Open Call will receive a $500 honorarium to help defer the costs associated with the show. Work submitted cannot have been shown in Philadelphia over the past year. There is a $15 application fee. Applications are open from April 1st – May 1st, midnight.
Applicants should upload the following content:
- 10 images &/or 3 videos examples, with an accompanying image list/info
- a written proposal for the exhibition (300 words maximum)
To apply, please visit https://napoleon.submittable.com/submit
If you’re including video work, please provide the link to each specific video on a site (Vimeo, Website, Youtube, etc…) where we can easily view that work.
Show information & important dates:
Applicants will be notified by May 15th. The show runs from July 7th to July 28th with an opening reception on First Friday, July 7th. The artist will be responsible for supplying all materials required for displaying their work (framing, media equipment, pedestals, hanging wire, etc.). The artist will also be responsible for installation during July 1st – July 6th and will de-install the exhibition during July 29th – July 30th. Gallery dimensions and floor plan can be found at https://napoleonnapoleon.com/about/floor-plan/
NAPOLEON is a collectively-run project space located in Philadelphia that strives to provide a platform for new work and new ideas. We are located in the Rollins Building on the edge of Philadelphia’s Chinatown and Callowhill neighborhoods. The building also houses other galleries such as Vox Populi, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Marginal Utility, Practice, Automat and Grizzly Grizzly and is a major hub for Philadelphia’s emerging art scene. For additional information or clarification, please email email@example.com and peruse the rest of our website www.napoleonnapoleon.com to get to know us better.
We’re looking to add a few more names to our list of potential writers for our recent endeavor: Exhibition Essays. Art historians, artists, and curators will be paired with upcoming exhibitions in an effort to extend the conversation at work in the gallery. We anticipate a lively exchange of critique between writer and artist and hope that the accompanying essay may offer a deeper interpretation for the visiting audience to consider. While there is no formal compensation for the essay, your piece will be published online here at our website, attached to email blasts about the show, and available to visitors in the gallery.
If you’re interested in writing, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with a short bio which includes your art interests and an attached CV. If you have a writing sample, please send it along, too. This will be a rolling application–there is no due date.
There is no format a writer must adhere to and we encourage you to be as creative as you’d like so long as you engage with the work and the artists showing in the exhibition.
